What Does 500 GSM Mean in a Baby Towel?

4 min readMiniBoo

500 GSM means that one square metre of the towel fabric weighs 500 grams. It describes the fabric’s weight per unit of area. It does not mean that the finished towel weighs 500 grams, and it is not a complete quality score.

If you are comparing baby towels online, read GSM alongside the fibre composition, dimensions and care instructions. Together, those details tell you much more than a single number.

GSM, towel size and total weight are different things

A large towel and a small towel can both be 500 GSM. Their fabric has the same specified weight per square metre, but the larger towel uses more of it. A hood, edging and decorative details also contribute to the finished product’s weight.

Here is a simple fabric-only example: a flat 80 × 80 cm piece has an area of 0.64 square metres. At 500 GSM, that piece would weigh 320 grams. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a measured weight for a MiniBoo towel.

Is a higher GSM always better?

No single GSM is best for every household. When comparing otherwise similar towels of the same size, a higher GSM means more fabric weight to handle and wash. Heavier towels can offer a fuller feel, while lighter options may be easier to pack and dry. Construction and fibre composition also matter.

For a baby towel, consider how it fits into your routine. Can you comfortably handle the size? Is there space to hang it open? Does the care label work with your usual laundry settings? A number alone cannot answer those questions.

What 500 GSM means in the MiniBoo range

MiniBoo’s product specification is 500 GSM terry, made from 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. The fabric specification is separate from the choice of character and size.

ExampleSizeFabric specification
The Bear90 × 90 cm500 GSM; 70% bamboo, 30% cotton
Little Bear81 × 81 cm500 GSM; 70% bamboo, 30% cotton

The Bear is the larger of these two towels. Little Bear has a smaller footprint. For help picturing the difference before ordering, see our baby towel size guide.

Read the fibre description as well as the number

MiniBoo towels combine 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. Read the material description alongside GSM and size when comparing the range.

GSM does not establish whether a towel is organic, antibacterial or suitable for a particular skin condition. Those are separate claims requiring their own evidence.

Check care before you choose

The MiniBoo care instructions specify a gentle machine wash at 30°C, washing separately, no bleach, tumble drying on low and no ironing. Follow the label on your own towel. Our hooded towel washing guide covers the routine in more detail.

Three questions before buying

  • What is it made from? Look for the actual fibre percentages.
  • How big is it? Compare centimetres or inches, rather than relying only on an age label.
  • How will I wash and dry it? Check the care instructions and the space you have available.

Use 500 GSM as one useful detail in that decision. Then choose the size and design that suit your family. You can compare the options in the MiniBoo hooded towel collection.

Quick questions

Does a 500 GSM towel weigh 500 grams?

Not necessarily. GSM describes a square metre of fabric; finished towel weight also depends on dimensions, the hood and other components.

Are all 500 GSM towels the same?

No. They can have different fibres, construction, dimensions and care instructions.

Is 500 GSM a baby-towel safety certification?

No. It is a fabric-weight specification, not a safety certification.
