Best Baby Towels: How to Choose for Your Family

The best baby towels are the ones that suit your child and your everyday laundry routine. Start with the dimensions, the fabric composition and the care label, then decide whether you prefer a hood and how much fabric you want for wrapping.

This guide is written by MiniBoo and uses our own towels as examples. It gives you a checklist for choosing a towel, from the first baths to the years that follow.

What makes a baby towel a good fit?

Begin with four details you can check before ordering: the towel’s width and length, whether it has a hood, its fabric composition and its washing instructions. A character you love can help you choose between designs, but read those practical details first.

Think about your own routine, too. How much fabric do you like to handle after a bath? How often do you wash towels? Where will you put a towel to dry? These questions can help you narrow your choice without treating any one feature as a universal rule.

Choosing a baby towel for a newborn

Both MiniBoo towel sizes are intended for use from birth. You do not have to choose the smaller size simply because you are shopping for a newborn, or assume that you will need to replace it immediately after the newborn stage.

Compare the dimensions and choose the amount of fabric you prefer. The age guidance below is approximate; it is a useful reference alongside the measurements.

Hooded baby towel or regular towel?

A hood is a design choice to consider alongside size and fabric. MiniBoo’s towels have animal hoods, and the range includes bear, cat, dog, koala, bunny, monkey and raccoon designs.

If you are still deciding which style you want, our hooded towel versus regular towel guide looks at the choice in more detail.

81 × 81 cm or 90 × 90 cm?

The Bear is MiniBoo’s larger towel. Little Bear and the other hooded towel designs measure 81 × 81 cm. These are two different sizes, even though both examples below have bear hoods.

ExampleDimensionsApproximate age guidance
Little Bear81 × 81 cmFrom birth to around 5 years
The Bear90 × 90 cmFrom birth to around 6 years

Read the fabric description and GSM together

MiniBoo specifies 70% bamboo and 30% cotton, in 500 GSM terry. Check the blend, GSM and dimensions together when comparing options within the range.

The blend describes the material composition. GSM describes fabric weight per square metre; it is separate from the dimensions and the weight of the finished towel. Our guide to what 500 GSM means in a baby towel explains the distinction. You can also read more about towel materials.

Think about washing and drying

A towel’s care instructions are part of the buying decision. For MiniBoo towels, the instructions are:

  • Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle.
  • Wash separately.
  • Do not bleach.
  • Tumble dry on low.
  • Do not iron.

Check the label on your towel and consider how the instructions fit your laundry routine. For the fuller walkthrough, read how to wash a baby towel.

Choose the animal hood you like

Once you have settled on a size, you can choose a character. The Bear is white and measures 90 × 90 cm. In the 81 × 81 cm range, options include Little Bear in white, Cream Bear in cream, The Cat in pink and The Dog in brown.

Check the product page for availability in your delivery country before deciding. This guide does not treat a listed design as a promise of current stock.

Baby towels and washcloths: check which you need

A washcloth set has different dimensions and quantities from a hooded towel. MiniBoo washcloths measure 25 × 25 cm each and come in sets of six, in white, pink or cream.

If you are putting together a bath-time list, consider towels and washcloths separately. Our guide to baby washcloths and everyday uses can help you plan.

A short buying checklist

  • Compare the actual width and length.
  • Decide whether you want a hood and which design you like.
  • Read the fabric composition and GSM.
  • Check the washing and drying instructions.
  • Check stock, delivery options and shipping cost for your country.
